On January 20th, 2012 Google Announced the “end of the Urchin Era”, stating it has now been “completely overshadowed by its tremendously popular offspring” (Google Analytics).
Urchin was the log file analyzer analytics software that Google acquired in 2005 to build its “Page Tagging” analytics solution: Google Analytics. At the time, the Analytics market was using several technologies like Page Tagging, Log file Analyzers, some hybrids and very few Packet Sniffers.
Google Introduced Google Analytics in 2006 as a page tagging completely for free with focus on the long tale. Later in 2008 and 2009 Google launched several new features that transformed Google Analytics a viable Corporate Solution.
Urchin has only been available during the past several years through Certified Urchin Resellers, and new sales will be officially discontinued at the end of March 2012. If you are an Urchin user you can keep using it for some years or migrate to Google Analytics. If that is your case please contact us, we will be pleased to help you with the migration.
